Hanoi improves supply, quality of tap water

The capital city of Hanoi is working to realise its set target to make tap water safe for drinking by 2020.

Hanoi (VNA) – The capital city of Hanoi is working to realise its set target tomake tap water safe for drinking by 2020.

As the city considers supplying clean water to local people as a way to improveliving standards, it has plans to upgrade and build more water plants,pipelines and treatment system.

A water plant using water from Duong River with a capacity of 300,000 cubicmetres per day and night is expected to be completed and put into operationthis year. Meanwhile, the existing plant using water supply from Da River willhave its capacity raised from 300,000 cubic metres to 600,000 cubic metres perday and night.

Inaddition, a new pipeline system and a plant using water from the Hong Riverwill be built and slated to be completed by 2020.

The city is working to expand the water supplying system to 70,391 householdsin 34 communes, and calling for investment to provide clean water for ruralcommunities in Me Linh, Ba Vi, Phuc Tho, Dan Phuong, Thach That and Chuong Mydistricts which are yet to have access to clean water.

Themunicipal People’s Committee has required that all new water plants andpipelines must use advanced technology so that by 2020, local tap water will bedrinkable.

Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said that thecity has increased media works to raise public awareness of the importance ofclean water and water saving.

The city has ordered relevant departments and branches to handle difficultiesin site clearance for water supply projects and inspect the projects’ progress,he added.-VNA
