Hanoi: Health check-ups for locals in flooded areas

Hanoi (VNA) – Citizens of Hoang Van Thu commune of Hanoi’s outlyingdistrict of Chuong My were provided with free health check-ups and medicine onAugust 16, as the area had been submerged by floodwater for three weeks.
According to Duong Viet Tai, Director ofChuong My district’s Health Centre, besides Hoang Van Thu commune, doctors fromHa Dong Ophthamology Hospital, the Hanoi Hospital of Dermatology andVenereology and Chuong My General Hospital plan to offer health check-ups toresidents in Nam Phuong Tien, Tan Tien, My Luong and Tot Dong communes, whichwere all hit by the recent flood.
Tai said the district authorities have takenmeasures to prevent diseases, especially pinkeye, dengue fever, measles andhand-foot-mouth, including cleaning the environment and spraying chemicals tokill mosquitoes and larvae to prevent the spread of dengue fever.

Together with the commune’s medical station,the communal authorities also provided medicine and taught locals how toprevent diseases, he said, adding that no flood-related disease outbreaks havebeen reported in the locality.
According to Deputy Director of themunicipal Health Department Hoang Duc Hanh, due to the recent flood, 59 peoplein Chuong My district caught pinkeye and 150 others, skin diseases.
Located 30km from downtown Hanoi, Chuong My,Quoc Oai and My Duc districts were among the hardest hit by heavy downpourswhich began on July 21, and a large part of Chuong My district is still leftunder water.

Residents must work closely with medical workers to prevent and control epidemics in areas where flood waters had been lingering in Hanoi’s Chuong My district for more than 10 days, said Nguyen Khac Hien, Director of the municipal Department of Health.
