Green Sunday campaign launched in Khanh Hoa

The Green Sunday campaign and a photo competition themed “Challenges for change” were launched in the central province of Khanh Hoa on May 5, attracting nearly 1,500 young people.

Khanh Hoa (VNA) – The Green Sunday campaign and aphoto competition themed “Challenges for change” were launched in the central provinceof Khanh Hoa on May 5, attracting nearly 1,500 young people.

The events were held in response to the 2019 anti-plasticwaste campaign launched by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh CommunistYouth Union (HCYU) and the National Tourism Year 2019 themed “Nha Trang –Colour of the Sea”.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Secretary of the provincialHCYU chapter Bui Hoai Nam asked union chapters to promote communicationsactivities to raise the awareness of environment protection and litterprevention among young people.

Later, thousands of youth unionists cleaned up the environmenton Cai river, polluted and coastal areas in Nha Trang city, Xom Bong and Hobridge pier areas in Vinh Tho and Phuong Sai wards, respectively.

The Green Sunday campaign is underway simultaneously in CamRanh, Van Ninh, Ninh Hoa and Cam Lam districts. In districts of Khanh Son,Khanh Vinh and Dien Khanh, youths cleaned up residential areas and dredgedcanals.

Meanwhile, the photo competition aimed to call for greater publicinvolvement in voluntary activities. It will open for submission until June 1with entries required to feature polluted areas before and after clean-up,which should be sent to the organising board via the email moitruongkhanhhoa2019@gmail.com.

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
