Every year, Vietnamese farmers burn millions of tonnes of rice stubble in the field instead of recycling them, a setback for the country’s orientation towards green development.
Every year, Vietnamese farmers burn millions of tonnes of ricestubble in the field instead of recycling them, a setback for thecountry’s orientation towards green development.

In a bid to address the issue, the International Rice Research Instituteheld a workshop on maximising the use of rice production by-products togenerate additional profit for locals, in the Mekong Delta city of CanTho on March 3.

According to figures revealed atthe workshop, the regional rice industry discards more than 22 milliontonnes of straws, 4.5 million tonnes of rice husks, and almost 2.2million tonnes of bran.

The institute pointed outa number of sustainable measures to tackle these concerns. Forinstance, with advanced technology, straws can be transformed intoethanol, eco-friendly products, construction material, and domesticanimal food. Rice husks, used as combustible material, is a potentialexport option to Japan, China or the Republic of Korea, valued at around500 VND per kilogram.

Associate Professor Dr.Duong Van Chinh, Director of the Dinh Thanh Agricultural ResearchCentre, said the use of technological advances during the harvestprocess will increase the quality and commercial value of by products.-VNA

﷽ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
