Global e-government rankings affect Vietnam’s investment attractiveness, national competitiveness, and negotiations on international trade deals, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has said.

Hanoi (VNA) – Global e-government rankings affectVietnam’s investment attractiveness, national competitiveness, and negotiationson international trade deals, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said at a recentmeeting.
Vietnam is ranked 89th overall among 193countries in the United Nations E-Government Survey 2016. Its rankings in threecomponent categories are 74th in the Online Service Index, 110th in theTelecommunication Infrastructure Index, and 127th in the Human Capital Index.
The survey shows that more and more countrieshave been providing public services online through one-stop platforms. Therewere eight lower-middle-income economies listed among the 65 countries with ahigh E-Government Development Index, mostly thanks to administrative reforms.
New technologies such as Big Data, IoT and GIShave proved useful for improving the effectiveness of authorised agencies’ serviceprovision. Social networks are also becoming effective means of communicationsbetween state agencies and people, according to the survey.
At the meeting, representatives from ministriesand sectors said many data the UN used to calculate Vietnam’s e-Governmentindexes were not updated or provided. For example, the Human Capital Indexincluded two new components: expected years of schooling for children and averageyears of schooling of adults, which Vietnam did not have available data.
In the Telecommunication Infrastructure Index,many real statistics such as estimated internet users, number of fixedtelephone lines, and number of mobile subscribers per 100 inhabitants wereactually higher than the data used by the survey.
Deputy PM Dam asked ministries to swiftly updaterelevant statistics and improve the provision of e-Government data forinternational organisations.
He also urged accelerating the provision of publicservices online, suggesting ministries learn from experience of countries withdeveloped online services like France and Singapore.
The Deputy PM asked local authorities to workharder in applying online services and suggested them outsource IT services,adding that major IT enterprises should play a bigger role in developing ane-Government.-VNA

A hub for sharing best practices, the event aims to forge solutions for financial sustainability, public media contracts, audience engagement, content innovation, and newsroom restructuring. It is also a moment for Vietnam’s media to accelerate its progress and figure out what the “revolutionary press” means in a new era.
From “Thanh nien”, Vietnam’s first revolutionary newspaper founded by Nguyen Ai Quoc (later President Ho Chi Minh) on June 21, 1925, the revolutionary press has remained devoted to its sacred missions -accompanying the nation, serving the Fatherland, and working for the people.
