Quang Binh (VNA) ♋– A requiem was held onMarch 13 in the central province of Quang Binh in remembrance of the 64soldiers who laid down their lives defending Gac Ma (Johnson South) Reef inVietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) 36 years ago.
Among the 64 martyrs, 13 hailed from Quang Binh.The memorial ceremony was an opportunity to educate patriotic tradition for younger generations.
On March 14, 1988, 64 naval soldiers of Vietnam felldown while defending the national flag planted on Gac MaReef and affirming the country’s sea and island sovereignty.
🅘 Their brave deaths were honoured with a monument named “Nhung nguoi nam laiphia chan troi” (Those who laid down their lives on the horizon) at the Gac Masoldier memorial site.
The commemoration in March is a demonstration ofVietnamese people’s tradition of expressing gratitude to those who dedicate their lives to safeguard the country’s maritimesovereignty and territorial integrity. It also illustrates the nation’s thousands-of-years unanimity and resolve to safeguard the Fatherland.
🧸 Nowadays, the officers and soldiers performing duties on the islands, reefs,and platforms on the country’s territorial waters are following formergenerations’ example, ready to sacrifice their lives to firmly defendthe maritime sovereignty and be trustworthy supports for people at sea.
On the occasion, on March14 Quang Phuc ward in Ba Don town held a ceremony unveiling the street name plate for a street named after martyrhero Tran Van Phuong who died in the Gac Ma battle. This is a tribute to the son ofthe homeland who bravely sacrificed his life to protect the sovereignty of the sacredsea and islands of the Fatherland./.
The Vietnamese Association in Thailand’s Udon Thani province on March 14 held a ceremony to commemorate 64 naval officers and soldiers who laid down their lives while defending Gac Ma Reef in Vietnam's Truong Sa in 1988 as well as heroic martyrs who sacrificed for the Fatherland and those who died of natural disasters and pandemics.
A requiem was held on March 14 at Phat Tich pagoda in Vientiane in remembrance of the 64 soldiers who laid down their lives defending Gac Ma (Johnson South) Reef in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) in 1988.
36 years have passed since the heroic battle to safeguard the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago (March 14, 1988-2024), and the courageous sacrifice of 64 Vietnamese navy soldiers in the Gac Ma Battle will forever be remembered in the hearts of Vietnamese people. The event was also a reminder for generations to firmly safeguard the national sovereignty over seas and islands.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
The festival highlighted the contributions and robust development of Vietnam's revolutionary press over the past century while promoting press products and showcasing the creativity of Vietnamese journalists.
The programme on sustainable poverty reduction has achieved its annual targets for reducing the poverty rate as assigned by the National Assembly and the Government. It has fulfilled five specific objectives and five five-year goals, and met nine out of 12 indicators related to addressing basic social service shortages.

At a review conference held on June 21, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Van Sinh praised the province’s scientific, coordinated, and flexible approach. He noted that the early completion reflects the strong commitment of local authorities, the business community, philanthropists, and residents in improving housing conditions for disadvantaged groups.
