A transport e-commerce market place that enables all major stakeholdersin the freight transport business to easily link up is expected to bebegin its initial operating period in 2016.

Nguyen Van Quyen,Directorate for Roads of Vietnam (DRVN) Deputy General Director, wasquoted by Transport newspaper as saying that the formation of the onlinetransport market aimed to create a breakthrough to enhance theeconomy's competitiveness, as transparency was expected to be enhancedand transport fees lowered.

Quyen said the pilot implementationof the online transport market was approved by the transport ministry, adding that the legal framework, along with management software, werebeing developed.

Following the roadmap, the transport market would become operational at the beginning of next year, Quyen added.

Theplatform was planned to be built for operation in major transportcentres, such as Hanoi, HCM City, Hai Phong, Da Nang and Can Tho.

Quyensaid that management of road transport remained outdated anddecentralised, which failed to ensure the quality of service, trafficsafety, as well as healthy competition among providers.

The formation of transport market places would help tackle these problems.

DoCong Thuy, Deputy Director of DRVA's Transport Department, said thetransport market place was an e-commerce platform that connected allstakeholders in the freight transport business, including logisticsservice providers and customers.

"Freight transport firms whichjoin the market place must be checked in terms of capacity, prestige andcommitments," Thuy said.

The platform would enable transportfirms to connect with each other to prevent their returning fromdeliveries with empty trucks, which was expected to help lower fees.

SharingThailand's experiences at a recent conference held by DRVN, RutthBanmyong from Thammasat University noted that the transport marketplacewas founded in Thailand in 2006 to resolve a problem in which up to 66percent of freight trains ran empty on their returns from deliveringcargo.

Freight transport demands and logistics information ofservice providers would be available in the market place for selectionand negotiations to optimise freight transport efficiencies, which wouldbenefit all parties, according to Banmyong.

Meanwhile, NguyenVan Thanh, President of Vietnam Automobile Transport Association, saidthe transport market place would help prevent unhealthy competitionamong logistics service providers.-VNA
