Former Malaysian Deputy PM faces 45 counts

The Kuala Lumpur Court charged former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi with 45 counts under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

Hanoi (VNA) – TheKuala Lumpur Court charged former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad ZahidHamidi with 45 counts under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financingand Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 and the Malaysian Anti-CorruptionCommission (MACC) Act 2009.

Zahid, who now leads the opposition UnitedMalays National Organisation (UMNO), faced 27 charges of money laundering, 10charges of power abuse and 8 charges of corruption involving a sum of 111million ringgit (26.6 million USD). 

He pleaded not guilty to the above charges, andis now freed after posting bail. The next trial will take place on December14. 

Earlier on October 18, he was arrested by MACCupon his arrival at the headquarters. 

He is being investigated over allegedmisappropriation of funds from the Akal Budi Foundation, of which he is thechairman.

MACC is investigating claims that 800,000 RMbelonging to the foundation was used to pay off his credit card bills.-VNA

Thai Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Vuttikrai Leewiraphan Thailand's formal proposal will be substantial enough for the US to consider further detailed negotiations. He hoped for a tariff rate not exceeding 10% and suggested that the US might extend the negotiation period if an agreement is not reached by the July 8 deadline.
