Former CDC Hanoi director sentenced to 10 years in jail
The Hanoi People’s Court on December 12 sentenced Nguyen Nhat Cam, former director of the Hanoi Centre for Disease Control (CDC Hanoi), to 10 years in prison for “violations on bidding regulations that causes serious consequences”.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi People’s Court on December 12 sentencedNguyen Nhat Cam, former director of the Hanoi Centre for Disease Control (CDCHanoi), to 10 years in prison for “violations on bidding regulations thatcauses serious consequences”.
Also accused of the same count, Nguyen Vu Ha Thanh, formerhead of the CDC Hanoi’s Financial-Accounting Office; and Dao The Vinh, Directorof Vietnam Scientific and Material Science Company Limited (MST), received ajail term of 6 years and 6 months.
Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, former head of the CDC Hanoi’sOrganisation Office; Nguyen Ngoc Nhat, an employee of Vitech DevelopmentCo.,Ltd; and Nguyen Tran Duy, former General Director of Nhan Thanh AssetValuation and Auctioning JSC, were jailed to 6 years.
A prison term of five years was given to Nguyen Ngoc Quynh,former head of the CDC Hanoi’s Professional Plan Office; and Nguyen ThanhTuyen, an employee of Phuong Dong Medical Equipment Co.,Ltd.
Meanwhile, Le Xuan Tuan, an official of CDC Hanoi; and HoangKim Thu, former Chief Accountant of CDC Hanoi, were sentenced to 3 years’probation.
The jury said that the defendants’ acts were extremelydangerous to the society, affecting the Party and State’s prestige.
The first-instance trial verdict said that taking advantageof the COVID-19 situation, from early February 2020, CDC former director NguyenNhat Cam colluded with Nhat, Tuyen and Vinh to raise the prices of medicalmachineries and equipment in a bidding package from CDC Hanoi before carryingout normal procedures.
He then directed his employees to legalise all normalprocedures, enabling MST to win the bid with a price they had agreed upon,resulting in an economic loss of over 5.4 billion VND (233,200 USD).
Procurators said Cam was the mastermind.
The defendants earlier confessed to police that they jackedup the price of the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)machines used in testing the new coronavirus by a factor of three./.
