Hanoi (VNA) - A southern food flea marketis to be opened in Mekong Delta Can Tho city, aiming to promote the country’sMekong Delta culinary specialities as well as to attract domestic andinternational visitors to the region, according to the municipal culture andtourism department.
The market, which will promote Mekong Deltaspecialties, is expected to attract national and international tourists, saidLe Van Tam, Deputy Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee.
The 6th Southern Traditional Cake Festival,which was held last month, was a successful event and many vendors and cakeartisans said they would like to participate in similar, long-term activities.
Can Tho said it would open a Southern Food FleaMarket every Saturday and Sunday at several tourism destinations, includingNinh Kieu Wharf and Nha Long Cho Co, among others.
Tam said that food hygiene inspections at stallswould be conducted regularly and that vendors must present a food safetyhygiene certificate in order to run their business.
Though gaining profit is important, vendors mustsell products at reasonable prices, he said, adding that organisers wouldwelcome all vendors who bring a variety of goods.
Nham Hung, a cultural tourism researcher, saidthat it was important for vendors and artisans to improve their skills andintroduce interesting products not only through storytelling but liveperformances.
He said that authorities should support vendorsand artisans in branding so they can add even more value to their products.
Can Tho has become a more popular tourismdestination in recent years.
During the recent four-day holiday, it attractedmore than 100,000 visits, up 12 percent year-on-year, and earned 30.5 billion VND(1.34 million USD), up 17 percent year-on-year.
Ninh Kieu Wharf, Truc Lam Phuong Nam Temple, MyKhanh Tourism Village and Cai Rang Float Market are among the most-visitedspots.
Despite the increasing number of tourists, CanTho has managed to met accommodation demand, with four- to five-star hotelsnearly fully booked.-VNA
