Ben Tre (VNA) – A groupof experts on Mekong Delta studies was introduced in Ben Tre province onOctober 25, as part of the third Mekong Connect 2017 economic forum.
According to Nguyen Huu Lap, ViceChairman of the Ben Tre People’s Committee, they are experienced scientists,who have deep knowledge of the region, particularly An Giang, Ben Tre, Can Thoand Dong Thap. Their research areas range from public policies, regionalconnectivity, and sustainable rural development to management of naturalresources and livelihoods. They are expected to give recommendations to boost theregion’s growth.
At the event, the experts discussedregional connectivity, focusing on resources and environmental issues,globalisation, smart agriculture, and start-ups.
Dr Vu Thanh Tu Anh, director ofresearch at the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program in Ho Chi Minh City andhead of the Mekong Delta expert group, said the region’s economic growth islagging behind compared to other regions in Vietnam due to limited resourcesand weak links among its provinces and cities.
Nguyen Huu Thien, an independentresearcher on climate change and the Mekong River, noted the region is one ofthree deltas most affected by climate change in the world.
He said sand mining has triggeredbank and coastal erosions, while well-digging has contributed to landsubsidence, necessitating fines for illegal sand and groundwater exploitation.
The third Mekong Connect 2017, themed“Developing local resources in association with technology strength”, convenedin Ben Tre on October 26. It was attended by 500 businessmen and more than 100experts.-VNA
The Mekong Connect 2017 will be held on October 25-26 in Ben Tre city, the same name province, focusing on seeking measures to make full use of technology to optimise the value of local products.
The 5th Mekong Delta investment forum (MekongInvest 2017) took place in Can Tho city on October 25 to call for investment in tourism projects across 13 regional localities.

At a review conference held on June 21, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Van Sinh praised the province’s scientific, coordinated, and flexible approach. He noted that the early completion reflects the strong commitment of local authorities, the business community, philanthropists, and residents in improving housing conditions for disadvantaged groups.
