The station’s functions are to analyse wastewater before it is discharged into the environment around the clock for three years, and to monitor the marine environment at three locations around Son Duong port in the central province of Ha Tinh. The analysis results will be sent to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for consideration and handling.
The move was made to supervise the company’s implementation of its commitments to deal with the consequences of the environmental incident it caused in the four central coastal provinces of Vietnam. The Taiwan-invested Formosa company, on June 30, admitted responsibility for mass fish deaths in the four central coastal provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Thua-Thien Hue between April and May.
The company promised a total compensation of 11.5 trillion VND (500 million USD) to support local fishermen to switch to other jobs and recover the polluted maritime environment. It also pledged to absolutely deal with shortcomings and limitations in waste and wastewater treatment, improve its production technologies to ensure waste is completely treated before being discharged into the environment as required by Vietnamese State management agencies, and not to repeat such an incident. In mid-July, the company was found burying a huge amount of waste at a farm run by the director of an environmental company in Ha Tinh’s Ky Anh town and at Thien Cam landfill in Cam Xuyen district one year earlier.-VNA

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
