Embassy supports Vietnamese Cambodians in Tonle Sap Lake

PhnomPenh (VNA) - A delegation of the Embassy of Vietnam in Cambodia ledby Ambassador Vu Quang Minh visited Vietnamese Cambodians in Kampong Chhangprovince on January 21 ahead of Vietnam’s Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Whileextending Tet greetings to the overseas Vietnamese living in the Tonle Sap Lakewho are now temporarily relocated in Chong Kok village of Phsar Chhangdistrict, Minh affirmed that the Party, State, Government and the Embassy ofVietnam will launch more activities in the coming time to help poor VietnameseCambodians to stabilise their lives, especially those on Tonle Sap Lake who arerequired to be relocated.

Henoted that Vietnamese businesses in Cambodia are willing to support people inchanging jobs and encouraged Vietnamese Cambodians to send their children tolocal schools to better integrate in the local society.

Atthe event, as many as 1,000 poor households in Chong Kok village received Tetgift packages from the embassy.

OnJanuary 22, the delegation is scheduled to pay a visit and present gifts to 500families in shelters in Kampong Tralach, Rolea Paea and Cholkiri districts.

TheVietnamese officials previously attended a working session with Governor Chuhhua Chann Doeun of Kampong Chhang provinceand asked local authorities to pay due attention to Vietnamese Cambodian in theresettlement plan of the province and promptly address their problems.

TheVietnamese Cambodians are among more than 10,000 people living in floatinghouses on Tonle Sap Lake who must relocate under the Cambodia Government’s planto address environmental pollution in the lake caused by floating houses.

KampongChhang province is currently home to about 2,400 families of VietnameseCambodians. -VNA
