Eight killed in landslide in northern Thailand

Thai media reported on July 29 that eight people have been killed after a landslide hit Baan Huay Khab village in the northern Thai province of Nan a day earlier.

Hanoi (VNA) – Thai media reported on July 29 that eightpeople have been killed after a landslide hit Baan Huay Khab village in thenorthern Thai province of Nan a day earlier.

The victims include two male adults, four women and twoyoung girls. All of 200 local residents have been evacuated to nearby temporaryshelter.

Officers have been deployed to block people from going backdue to bad weather conditions and risk of another landslide.

Staff of the Geology Department will be sentto Baan Huay Khab to study the soil samples to determine the cause of thelandslide and to find out what could be done to prevent a repeat of the naturaldisaster.

The landslide occurred on July 28 morning. Soil loosened byheavy rains rushed down a nearby slope, burying the community in mud up to 10metres deep in some areas.

Officials remain on full alert as cracks have been found fora distance of 200 metres on the mountain above the community. This raisedconcern that there might be a new round of mudslides.-VNA
