Earth Hour event to take place in Bangkok on March 28

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will be holding the 60 Earth Hour 2015 activity on March 28 to raise public awareness and participate in solving the climate issue by turning off their unused electrical appliances, said Deputy Governor.

The Deputy Governorof Bangkok Jumpol Sumpaopol has revealed that the BMA, in cooperationwith FEED Thailand, WWF Thailand and along with government and privateagencies, will be holding the 60 Earth Hour 2015 activity under the‘Change Climate Change’ concept.

The general public and officesare invited to attend this activity by turning off unused electricalappliances together at the same time as other parts of the world, forone hour from 8:30-9:30pm on March 28.

The Bangkok DeputyGovernor has said that the youth should be instilled on how to useenergy efficiently, in keep with the strategy to make Bangkok a lowcarbon emission city through lifestyle change and energy consumptionawareness.

He has said that there are three main activities atthe 60 Earth Hour 2015, namely the cycling and tree planting eventduring March 23-27, the exhibition on global climate change on March24-27 at Central World shopping center, and the 1 hour ‘turn off’activity on March 28.

Bangkok's key landmarks, namely the GrandPalace, the Temple of Dawn, the Giant Swing, and the Rama IX bridge willbe participating in the 60 Earth Hour event by turning their lightingoff during the announced time as well. Lighting on important roads suchas the Silom Road, Ratchadaphisek Road, Khao San Road, Yaowarat Road,and New Petchburi Road will also be adjusted to mark the global event.

TheEarth Hour activity in previous year resulted in an electrical usagereduction in Bangkok by 1,768 megawatts, equivalent to the reduction of947 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The energy production drop helped save upto 6.76 million baht in electrical costs.-VNA/NNT
