Ninh Thuan is home to 20 irrigation reservoirs with total designcapacity of more than 192 million cubic metres. However, the watervolume at these reservoirs has dropped to 49 million cu.m, or 24.88million cu.m less than the level in the same period of previous years.
According to Vice Director of Ninh Thuan Departmentof Agriculture and Rural Development Chau Thang Long, the water shortageis expected to have a great influence on the province’s agriculturalproduction plan, which aims to cultivate over 22,900 ha of food crops.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Developmenthas closely cooperated with other agencies to build drought responseplans, giving priority to ensuring water for daily use and drinkingwater for animals. Rotational irrigation will be applied while localfarmers are encouraged to switch to drought resistant crops.-VNA
