Dong Thap: Rural sanitation improves through CHOBA programme

As many as 7,300 sanitary toilets have been built under the programmesince 2012 in 45 communes of the province, accounting for 76.6 percentof the target.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of theprovincial People’s Committee said the project, which will run throughthis year, not only helps the poor to improve hygiene but also has adeep social and economic meaning, especially in building new-style ruralareas.
CHOBA project, funded by East Meets Westfoundation, assists poor, nearly poor, and disadvantaged families inbuilding new sanitary toilets to improve the environment, reducewaterborne diseases, and change the people’s sanitary habits andbehaviours.
The project does not support finance directly forthe households, but via award packs for families, which are deliveredafter they build hygienic toilets with preferential loans. Communes withan increase of 30 percent in the number of sanitary lavatories will bepresented with 64 million VND.
So far, the project has beenconducted in 496 communes in 10 provinces nationwide, aiming to betterhygiene conditions for 1.4 million people in rural areas.-VNA
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.

The programme on sustainable poverty reduction has achieved its annual targets for reducing the poverty rate as assigned by the National Assembly and the Government. It has fulfilled five specific objectives and five five-year goals, and met nine out of 12 indicators related to addressing basic social service shortages.
