An office for registration of national domain name “.vn” has been inaugurated in Dong Thap province, becoming the first of its kind in the Mekong Delta locality.

The facility is located at the provincial Information and CommunicationTechnology (ICT) Centre. Organisations and individuals can alsoregister the domain name online via website //dtict.vn/.
According to Doan Thanh Binh, Director of the provincial Department of Information and Communications, said that thelaunching of the facility is an opening activity in the implementation of thedigital transformation roadmap of Dong Thap, thus raising publicawareness, promoting the Internet resources and affirming the nationalsovereignty on the cyber space.
He held that compared to international domain names, thenational domains name of “.vn” is safer, easier to recognize and more reliable.
According to the department, DongThap has seen the registration of 838 domain names “.vn” and about 1,204international domain names. Meanwhile, the locality is home to 4,244businesses, he said, adding that the ratio of businesses using the domain name “.vn”has been very low, leading to risks of conflicts on the cyber space amidgrowing e-commerce activities.
The inauguration of the facility is expected to help businesses to register forthe domain name in an easier manner, thus improving the level of recognition oftheir trademarks and make them searchable on the Internet, and improving theprovince’s indexes in digital transformation, e-commerce and online shopping./.
More than 2,500 websites with Vietnamese domains were attacked in the third quarter, meaning Vietnam stands in 10th in terms of the largest number of cyber attacks in the world.
About 486,000 internet addresses had been registered with Vietnam’s top-level domain (TLD) “.vn” as of September 30, which tops all other ASEAN domains and is among Asia-Pacific’s top ten in terms of usage.
With increasing use of technology, Vietnam is facing risks in terms of cybersecurity, threatening national security, said Nguyen Minh Chinh, Director General of the Cyber Security and High-tech Crime Prevention Department under the Ministry of Public Security.
