Dengue fever spreads in Bangkok

Bangkok (VNA) –
Bangkok Governor Aswin Khwanmuang on September 17 alerted citizens todengue fever as the city has recorded nearly 6,000 infections and fivefatalities so far this year.

The disease isspreading in Nong Chok, Huai Khwang, Bang Kapi and Klong Samwa districts.Khwanmuang said the spreading was attributed to heavy and consistent rain inthe city.

To cope with dengue fever, the local authorities have increased disease controlmeasures, including fumigation to kill mosquito larvae. Local people areadvised to keep their home and neighbouring areas clean, not to litter or letwater collect at any site, as well as keep all drains clean and clear.

Anyone who suffered from a fever for more than three days should see a doctorright away, he said.

Thailand hasdiagnosed 52,670 cases of dengue fever and 69 of them died. Bangkok hasrecorded 5,899 patients and the disease has claimed the lives of five adults inthe city, according to the health department of Bangkok.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease. Dengue virus is transmitted by femalemosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and to a lesser extent,Ae.albopictus. it is widespread throughout the tropics, with local variationsin risk influenced by rainfall, temperature and unplanned rapid urbanisation.

Infections were mostly found in age groups of 5-9, 10-14 and 15-24 yearsold.-VNA
