Danish NGO funds UXO clearance in Quang Nam province

Denmark’s non-governmental organisation DDG is providing a non-refundable aid of nearly 1.29 million USD for phase II of a project on searching for and settling unexploded ordnance (UXO) in central Quang Nam province.

Hanoi (VNA) – Denmark’s non-governmental organisationDDG is providing a non-refundable aid of nearly 1.29 million USD for phase IIof a project on searching for and settling unexploded ordnance (UXO) in centralQuang Nam province.

This project, recently been approved the Prime Minister, isscheduled to be implemented in 28 months, from September 1, 2016 to December31, 2018.

It aims to minimise UXO’s risks and negative impacts on thelocal community by searching for and clearing unexploded bombs, landmines andordnance.

About 800,000tonnes of UXO are scattered across 6.6 million hectares or 20.12 percent ofVietnam’s land, mainly in the central region, according to the State SteeringCommittee for the national action programme on settling post-war bomb andlandmine impacts. 

The US army usedmore than 15 million tonnes of bombs and mines in the war in Vietnam, fourtimes the amount used in World War II. As a result, Vietnam has been listedamong the countries most contaminated with UXO. 

UXO claimed42,135 lives and injured 62,163 others from 1975 to 2000. Vietnam has spenttens of millions of USD every year on UXO clearance and providing vocationaltraining to and resettling UXO victims.-VNA
