Da Nang proud to be Vietnam’s green city of the year

A ceremony was held in Da Nang central city on August 31 to receive the title of National Capital 2018 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)’s One Planet City Challenge programme.

Da Nang (VNA) – A ceremony was heldin Da Nang central city on August 31 to receive the title of National Capital2018 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)’s One Planet City Challengeprogramme.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of themunicipal People’s Committee Nguyen Ngoc Tuan stressed that the award is apride of local people and offers chances for the city to promote strongeractions in the building of Da Nang as a green city in the coming time.

A total of 132 metropolises from 23 countriesentered the One Planet City Challenge programme. In addition to Da Nang, DongHa city (Quang Tri) and Hoi An ancient town (Quang Nam) also qualified for nextround of the competition. 

Da Nang made it onto the list of 21 cities fromaround the world. The central city had submitted a target of reducinggreenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent from 2016, along with plans for solarpower development, biofuel use, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes and wastewatertreatment.

According to a WWF statement, cities generate 70percent of the world’s carbon emissions, and the WWF’s One Planet CityChallenge was a biennial competition that recognised and rewarded cities fordeveloping infrastructure, housing, transport and mobility solutions to powerthe global transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.

It said 50 percent of the global populationlived in urban areas, and cities would be home to about 6 billion people by2050.

In 2016, the WWF recognised Hue city asVietnam’s National Earth Hour Capital 2016 as part of the highly selectiveglobal Earth Hour City Challenge.

The One Planet City Challenge was designed bythe WWF to mobilise action and support from cities in global climate efforts,including the goals now set forth by the Paris Agreement. About 400 cities inthe world have joined the programme since 2011.-VNA

Vietnam r🐭amps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
