Cycling tourney celebrating Dien Bien Phu Victory wraps up

Dien Bien (VNA) – A cyclingtournament celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May7, 1954 – 2019) wrapped up in Dien Bien Phu city of the northwestern mountainousprovince of Dien Bien on May 6.

Yedi Misamad of Loc Troi Group won theyellow jersey while Quang Van Cuong of the same team secured the blue one. Philippinecyclist Ismael Grospe earned the red jersey.
The VUS Ho Chi Minh City triumphed in teamcategory. Meanwhile, Loc Troi Group snatched the second prize and Bike lifeDong Nai took the third place.

The six-day cycling event began on May 1, withfour stages stretching nearly 500 km in total. It went along historicaldestinations of Vietnam’s northwestern region, such as Phu Cuong, Pha Din andTang Quang mountain passes.

The race attracted 70 cyclists of 10domestic and two foreign teams of Japan and the Philippines.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, ViceChairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Van Quy said that the cyclingtournament aims to discover new talents and to honour Dien Bien Phu soldiers.

On the occasion, the organisers presentednearly 1,000 gifts worth 1.5 billion VND (64,360 USD) to soldiers who took partin the historic campaign, policy beneficiaries and disadvantaged students.

Under the command of General Vo NguyenGiap, the Vietnam People’s Army won the Dien Bien Phu historical victory inDien Bien province on May 7, 1954, making important contributions to ending theIndochina war with the signing of Geneva Agreement on July 20, 1954, thusrestoring peace in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.-VNA

ꦛ Vietnam re-elected to 2005 UNESCO Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee
