Cuba’s Giron victory commemorated in HCM City

The Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations and the city’s Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association held a celebration to mark the 58th anniversary of Cuba’s Giron victory (April 19, 1961-2019).

HCM City (VNA) – The Ho Chi Minh City Union ofFriendship Organisations and the city’s Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Associationheld a celebration to mark the 58th anniversary of Cuba’s Giron victory (April19, 1961-2019).

In 1961, more than 1,500 US-trained mercenary troops landedat Giron beach as part of a scheme to overthrow the fledging Cuban government.Under the direct command of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, the invasion wasdefeated on April 19 in under 72 hours.

In her opening speech at the ceremony, the association’s ChairwomanTruong Thi Hien underlined the historical significance of the event, whichhelped Cuba advance forward in its journey of building socialism.

She said Vietnam and Cuba have stood side-by-side throughtheir most difficult periods, adding that their high-ranking party, government,and military leaders have engaged in regular exchange of visits to beef up thebilateral traditional solidarity and comprehensive cooperation.  

Hien affirmed that Vietnam supports Cuba’s socio-economicreform and stance on protecting its national sovereignty and territorialintegrity.

She said her association is proud of its collaboration withthe Cuban Consulate General in the city to host various friendship activities.

Cuban Consul General to Ho Chi Minh City Indira LopezArguelles said the celebration of the victory demonstrates the hope forbloodshed not to be repeated in Cuba or anywhere else in Latin America. It markedthe start of socialism building in Cuba, the first of its kind in the WesternHemisphere, she added.

The diplomat expressed her deep gratitude for Vietnamesesoldiers, who fought for the independence and socialism of not only their homecountry, but also Cuba. –VNA
