Coordination needed to ensure national interests, security: Minister

Hanoi (VNA) – The Government,National Assembly, ministries and localities should focus on implementing thenational security strategy in 2020 and strengthen coordination to ensurenational interests and security in all fields, Minister of Public Security Gen.To Lam said at the government-to-locality teleconference on December 31.
He said the review of the three-yearimplementation of the Politburo’s directive on economic security is animportant task to develop the economy in the right direction, and in a sustainableand stable manner as requested by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc: notexchanging economic development for security, stability and environment.
Lam noted that in 2019, the number of criminalcases went down by 7.39 percent year-on-year, an impressive figure compared tothe ministry’s earlier set target of 3-5 percent.
In the year, police handled 97,000 cases,notably drug trafficking, corruption, trade frauds, and environmentalviolations, the minister added.
Regarding the defence work, Sen. Lieut. Gen.Phan Van Giang, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army andDeputy Minister of National Defence, said in 2019, the army promoted its corerole in building all-people defence, and actively participated in the settlementof natural disaster consequences, environmental incidents, search and rescue,poverty reduction, and new-style rural building.
The Ministry of National Defence also joinedexercises with other countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) to ensure navigation security, he said, adding that the ministry is building self-defence militia forces incoastal areas to defend the nation’s sovereignty over seas and islands./.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on December 19 lauded the role of the public security forces in a wide range of areas, from socio-economic development to administrative reform, the fight against corruption and wastefulness, national defence and security, and foreign affairs.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc requested resolutely fighting manifestations of lack of responsibility and emotionless response to legitimate requirements of citizens during the 75th national public security conference in Hanoi on December 24.
Economic development must go together with environmental protection and social development to ensure sustainable growth and prosperity, said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
Stronger efforts and determination are required to achieve and surpass the set targets, especially in the eradication of makeshift and dilapidated houses nationwide, the acceleration of public investment disbursement, and the implementation of nationally important transport projects, PM Pham Minh Chinh noted.
The trip will be made at the invitations of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and WEF President and CEO Børge Brende, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
