Indonesian Minister of Manpower Hanif Dakhiri (Source:VNA) Jakarta (VNA) – The Centre for Southeast Asian Studies and the Dutchembassy in Indonesia co-hosted the international conference themed “HumanRights, Migration and Development in the Association of Southeast AsianNations” in Jakarta on December 12.
Theevent was held on the occasion of International Human Rights Day (December 10)and the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN, attracting over 100delegates from research centres, ministries, agencies, international andnon-governmental organisations.
Itaimed to raise the ASEAN member states’ awareness of migrant workers’ impact onthe regional socio-culture till 2025, and the importance of human rightsprotection in migration for employment purpose.
Speakingat the event, Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Rob Swartbol and IndonesianMinister of Manpower Hanif Dakhiri said raising awareness of promoting andprotecting human rights of migrant workers is one of the important factors tosuccessfully build a safe and prosperous area in the region via improving locallives.
DinnaWisnu, Indonesian Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission onHuman Rights (AICHR) quoted the UN statistics 2015 as saying that nearly 3.3percent of the world population (or 244 million people) move to new living andworking areas each year, which is also one of the key priority programmes ofthe ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights.
AICHRnoted that there remains the gap in terms of social welfare provision, rightsto access to health care services, and salary to female workers.
During two sessions, participants discussedinitiatives to protect human rights and migrant workers for employment purpose,safe migration for workers, and rights of migrant workers, among others.-VNA
