Hanoi (VNA) – The information portal and communication campaign “Joininghands to reduce plastic waste” made debut on October 7 at //chungtaygiamnhua.com.

The communication campaign is part of activities within the pilotproject “Initiative to establish a supermarket alliance to reduce theconsumption of single-use plastic bags in Vietnam” (Plastic Alliance).

It is an initiative of the project “Rethinking Plastics –Circular Economy Solutions to Marine Litter” funded by the European Union andthe German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and supporting atransition towards a circular economy for plastics to reduce plastic wasteleakage into the sea.

Fanny Quertamp, Senior Specialist of the "Rethinking Plastics" project,affirmed that, within the framework of the project, the EU and the German ministrywill stand side by side with Vietnam in efforts to reduce ocean plastic waste,by encouraging supermarkets and consumers to change their habits in order toreduce the use of single-use plastic bags.

The communication campaign has been implemented from Octoberwith various forms of communications expected to bring the most effective influencesto promote changes in behaviours of the whole society./.

🍌 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

𝓀 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
