Co Tu cultural expressions get national heritage status

Four expressions of cultural heritage in the mountainous districts of the central province of Quang Nam have been recognised as national intangible heritage at the seventh National Heritage Council meeting.
Four expressions of cultural heritage in the mountainous districts ofthe central province of Quang Nam have been recognised as nationalintangible heritage at the seventh National Heritage Council meeting.

Theprovincial Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism said that the fourexpressions of cultural heritage are the art of weaving brocade by hand;the Tan tung da da dance of the Co Tu ethnic minority; gu (the art ofdecorating cay neu or a wooden pole of the Cor ethnic minority); and theprocession of Ba Cho Duoc (the goddess of the Cham people) in ThangBinh district.

The art of weaving brocade by hand has beenpreserved by the Co Tu ethnic group in the Truong Son mountain range,while their traditional dance is performed at harvest time or during amajor community festival.

Co Tu artisans often decorate wooden poles with carvings and colours made from resin, seeds, saffron and limestone.

Quang Nam is home to the world heritage sites of Hoi An, the My Son sanctuary and the Cham Island biosphere reserve.

Themountainous districts are a favourite destination for motorbike ridesand off-the-road adventures that give a glimpse of the lifestyle ofethnic minorities at 1,700m above the sea level.-VNA
