China, Malaysia agree to foster bilateral ties

China and Malaysia have reached a number of agreements which aim to bolster the bilateral ties during Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s visit to Beihing.

Hanoi (VNA) – China and Malaysia have reached a number of agreementswhich aim to bolster the bilateral ties during Malaysian Prime MinisterMahathir Mohamad’s visit to Beihing.

Addressing a joint press conference between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and hisMalaysian counterpart at Beijing's Great Hall of the People on August 20, Liaffirmed that his Government is ready to boost bilateral relations and economiccooperation with Malaysia.

The agreements reached during Mahathir'strip showed the two countries would remain friendly in the long term, he said.

For his part, Mahathir affirmed his visit had seen fruitful outcomes and expressedhis belief that Beijing would look sympathetically towards the problems bothsides have to resolve. He also said he hopes for renegotiation of agreementswith China.

At the press conference, both leaders agreed to support free trade, saying itshould be fair trade.

Mahathir’s August 17-21 visit to Beijing takes place in the context that the twocountries’ relations have been strained since Mahathir returned to power in Mayand then suspended several Chinese projects approved by former Prime MinisterNajib Razak.

Some days before arriving in Beijing, PM Mahathir declared that Malaysia wantsto cancel a 20 billion USD East Coast Rail Link projects and two gas pipelineprojects worth 2.3 billion USD funded by China.-VNA
