Ninh Binh (VNA) - Catholic artist Tran Hoa Binh from the northern province of Ninh Binh has dedicated over 50 years to the art of traditional portraiture, particularly creating powerful depictions of President Ho Chi Minh. His works have captivated art lovers and made him an example of following Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts, ethics, and style.
Determination to become an artist with a mission
Binh works from his modest home on the outskirts of Phat Diem West, in Kim Son district of Ninh Binh. His reputation as a skilled portrait artist is known both locally and beyond.
Born in 1955 into a humble Catholic family, Binh grew up learning values of patriotism and service to the community. At 13, he was guided by his father, talented local artist Nam Phong, who taught him the basics of painting.
Binh fondly recalls how his father, a devout Christian and patriot, dedicated his life to art, producing many notable works, including the famous “Duc me Viet Nam” (Our Lady of of Vietnam) displayed at the Vatican. Inspired by his father, Binh made it his goal to become a respected artist, determined to follow his father’s example.
Despite early access to his father’s tools, the artist realised painting was no easy task. With his father’s support, his skills improved, and he eventually tackled the difficult challenge of painting portraits of President Ho Chi Minh - a subject that demands both technical skill and a deep respect for the leader’s spirit.
Passion for the craft
Guided by his father, Binh developed a deep admiration for President Ho Chi Minh, researching him through books and articles. At 16, he completed his first portrait of the President, a moment he cherishes.
In the same year, during a year-end meeting, Binh presented his portrait of President Ho Chi Minh, which received resounding applause from the audience. This recognition confirmed his skills and inspired him to continue developing his craft.
Over more than 50 years, Binh has created thousands of paintings, including Catholic themes, landscapes, rural life, and portraits. His portraits of President Ho Chi Minh are especially memorable. He proudly notes that between 2000 and 2015, he painted the most portraits of the late leader. To date, he has completed over 1,000 portraits, many of which are purchased as gifts for national holidays or important events. Binh said that the hardest part of painting President Ho Chi Minh is capturing his gaze, which is bright and full of emotion. It’s difficult to express. As a result, he spends up to a week or longer on each portrait to ensure it reflects the leader’s spirit.
Binh is committed to passing on his passion for art to the next generation. He is proud that all four of his children are now artists, each with stable careers in the field. He teaches them that the key to success in art is love for the craft, striving for excellence, and, most importantly, having a true dedication to the work.
