Canada supports LGBT rights, anti-human trafficking work

The Embassy of Canada has announced a grant of 94,252 CAD for projects on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) people rights, and anti-human trafficking interventions.

Three localnon-governmental organisations (NGOs) will receive aid through theCanada Fund for Local Initiatives 2014-2015, namely the ICS Centre in HoChi Minh City, the Centre for Development and Integration (CDI) and theCenter for Creative Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP) inHanoi, the embassy said in its press release issued on December 8.

Accordingly, the ICS Centre in HCM City will receive 30,607 CAD forthe Project: “LGBT rights are human rights – Building capacity tosustain the movement for LGBT human rights in Vietnam at the nationaland local levels”.

The project is to sustain the momentum of themovement for human rights of LGBT persons at the national level and tospearhead the movement in 15 provinces.

The CCIHP will be given30,430 CAD for the project: “Voices Beyond Borders: Combating HumanTrafficking in Northern Border Provinces of Vietnam”.

It willaddress human trafficking in Lao Cai province through the use ofcreative communication (photo-voice) and direct advocacy undertaken bysurvivors of trafficking and their families to raise awareness oftrafficking, help to prevent it from occurring, and to work to ensurethat survivors of trafficking are supported and perpetrators prosecuted.

The CDI will receive 33,215 CAD for the project: “Legal supportto at risk groups and victims of human trafficking in Trung Khanhborder district, Cao Bang province”.

It aims to improve thelegal understanding and to provide legal counseling for localstakeholders in Cao Bang in order to improve the capacity of thosevulnerable to human-trafficking to protect themselves.

It alsosupports for returning victims. About 1,600 people of three communes inTrung Khanh district are expected to directly benefit from thisproject.-VNA
