CanTho (VNA) – Secretary of the Can Tho city Party Committee Tran QuocTrung has called on Canadian firms to invest in hi-tech agriculture in thecity.

Hemet with Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Ping Kitnikone on March 14, saying thecity is working on the planning of three hi-tech agricultural production areas forsubmission to the Government for approval.

Hi-techagriculture will help the city improve the quality and value of itsagricultural exports while bettering its adaptation to increasing climatechange impacts, such as salt water intrusion, landslides and fresh watershortages in the Mekong Delta region, Trung added.

Healso expressed his hope that Canadian firms will explore investmentopportunities in manufacturing farming machines given the city is the nation’sbiggest hub of producing and exporting farm products.

Thecity also wants to join hands with Canadian companies to develop highadded-value export product chains and in information and communicationtechnology, and education and training.

Addressingthe event, the Ambassador said in 2016, the bilateral trade value between thetwo nations hit 5 billion USD, of which a majority of goods shipped from Vietnamto Canada is agricultural and fishery products.

Thetwo nations also shared a similar economic structure, with more focus on smalland medium-sized enterprises than large-scale factories, she said, adding thatCanadian investors’ overseas investments help create high added-value andestablish win-win value chains.

Canadianwants to explore further the city’s hi-tech agriculture potential to expandtheir market and products. The country wants to connect with multiple nationsin the Asian – Pacific region, the diplomat noted.-VNA
