Can Tho plans to eliminate run-down houses before reunification anniversary
According to Tran Phu Loc Thanh, Director of the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment, work has started on all 531 houses designated for renovation or reconstruction, benefiting poor households, near-poor families, and people with meritorious service to the nation, with 141 homes already completed and handed over to beneficiaries.

Can Tho (VNA)൲ – The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho is set to complete its task of eliminating temporary and run-down houses before April 30, marking a significant milestone in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – 2025).
According to Tran Phu Loc Thanh, Director of the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment, work has started on all 531 houses designated for renovation or reconstruction, benefiting poor households, near-poor families, and people with meritorious service to the nation, with 141 homes already completed and handed over to beneficiaries.
To fund the initiative, the city mobilised multiple financial sources, ensuring adequate support for eligible households. The contributions include over 16.2 billion VND (over 633,000 USD) from the 5% state budget savings on regular expenditures; more than 1.7 billion VND from the government; and over 9.36 billion VND from donations via the “For the Poor” Fund, the Gratitude Fund, and other sources.
The Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho, along with local authorities, actively encouraged businesses, organisations, and individuals to contribute, accelerating the completion of the programme. Families receiving support also contributed over 770 million VND, while local volunteers provided over 200 workdays to enhance housing quality./.
So far, a total of 1,016 temporary and dilapidated houses across the province have been renovated or replaced, demonstrating the effective involvement of the entire political system and society to bring a better life to disadvantaged residents.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Head of the Central Steering Committee for the Elimination of Temporary and Dilapidated Houses emphasised the goal of completing the programme by October 31, 2025, while chairing the committee's third meeting to review progress and set future tasks. So far, over 65,000 houses have been completed and handed over, while more than 56,000 are under construction.
A total of 121,638 temporary and dilapidated houses across Vietnam had been renovated or replaced as of March 6. Of these, 65,564 homes have been completed, while construction of 56,074 others has been commenced. Specifically, 10,338 houses have been built or repaired for those who rendered services to revolution.

He noted that the early completion reflects the strong commitment of local authorities, the business community, philanthropists, and residents in improving housing conditions for disadvantaged groups.
The VNA delegation, led by General Director Vu Viet Trang, actively participated in the event, engaging in both professional and diplomatic activities.
