Cambodia’s CNRP keeps new leadership

The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) on April 2 decided to keep its new leadership and withdraw its slogan in the party’s campaign policy for the communal election slated for June.

– The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party(CNRP) on April 2 decided to keep its new leadership and withdraw its slogan inthe party’s campaign policy for the communal election slated for June.

Accordingly, Kem Sokha was supported to become leader of the CNRP until the endof his term, replacing former president Sam Rainsy. Meanwhile, the appointmentof Pol Hom, Mu Sochua and Eng Chhay Eang as vice presidents would also stand.

The party said that the appointments are in line with new Article 47 of itsinternal rules adopted on March 2.

The slogan “replacing commune chiefs who serve their party with commune chiefswho serve the people” were officially scrapped from its communal electioncampaign.

Earlier, the CNRP convened its extraordinary congress on March 2 to amendarticles 45 and 47 of the party’s statute, removing an 18-month moratorium onappointing a new president and changing the structure of the party’s leadership.The congress also saw Kem Sokha named as president after the self-exiledincumbent, Sam Rainsy, stepped down on February 11. The move aimed to avoid therisk of the dissolution of the CNRP.

On March 22, Cambodia's Interior Ministry announced that the CNRP’s election ofnew leadership is contrary to the party’s regulations while asking the party towithdraw the controversial slogan.-VNA
