Cambodian general election draws almost 45,000 observers

As many as 44,999 domestic observers from 81 parties, organisations and associations and 17 foreign observers from Myanmar, Singapore and China, have registered for observing the National Assembly election of Cambodia that is slated for July 29.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – As many as 44,999 domestic observers from 81 parties, organisationsand associations and 17 foreign observers from Myanmar, Singapore and China,have registered for observing the National Assembly election of Cambodia thatis slated for July 29.

Spokesperson ofthe Cambodian National Election Committee (NEC) Dim Sovannarom said that thecommittee has also received registrations from 5,711 observers from non-governmentalorganisations and associations, including some international observers from theInternational Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).

Sovannarom did not mention specificnames of any organisation, but in the previous elections, the majority werefrom the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC).

The registration for observers willwrap up on July 18, but the tally has already eclipsed the 40,456 observersthat were registered for the 2013 election.

Spokesman of the Cambodian Councilof Ministers Phay Siphan said that the record high in the number of registeredobservers will dispel criticisms and help ensure the polls are accountable andacceptable.

Meanwhile, election expert YoeurngSotheara welcomed the huge number of observers. He said the law does notmention about the participation of national and international observers, but itonly has political value to legitimise the election in the eyes of theinternational community.-VNA
