Phnom Penh (VNA) – ✅President To Lam's state visit to Cambodia from July 12-13 holds great significance, demonstrating and reaffirming the highest level of close relations between the two countries, said Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sok Chenda Sophea.

Speaking to the Vietnam News Agency in Phnom Penh, the official stressed that it is the honour for Cambodia to welcome President Lam on his state visit. The exchange of high-level visits demonstrates the close ties between the two countries, he stressed, recalling the official visit to Vietnam by Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet in December 2023 after taking office in August the same year. The state visit by the Vietnamese President, who took office in June, holds great significance, reflecting and affirming the close relationship at the highest level, he noted. Sok Chenda Sophea described Vietnam and Cambodia as “friends” that stood side by side and provided mutual support to overcome hardships in the past, and cooperate with each other at present.
The people and governments of the two countries have supported each other at all times, in both difficult and favourable situations, he emphasised. Regarding the "fine neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability" motto formed in 2005, the official said it covers all aspects of the Vietnam-Cambodia relationship. For the “fine neighbourliness”, he elaborated that “we always wish our neighbours happiness, development and stability,” adding it is understandable to all residents of the two countries. For the “traditional friendship,” the Deputy PM referred to the sharing of both difficulties and good things, stressing it is crucial to reaffirm that this friendship is not new, but a cherished tradition.
Mentioning the “comprehensive cooperation,” he said the two countries should strive for the prosperity and interest of their people. Looking ahead, the official described the bilateral comprehensive cooperation across various fields, including national defence, education, health care, trade and investment, as a key area for continued collaboration. Meanwhile, the “long-term sustainability” shows the wisdom and maturity of the leadership vision as well as the bilateral ties, he said, explaining that peace and stability are decisive factors to the development of each country, for the sake of their people. The official also expressed his admiration for Vietnam’s strong socio-economic developments over the past two decades, which, he said, is attributable to its stability. The above motto is a lodestar for both nations, particularly for future generations, he said, adding that by understanding and following this path, both countries will prosper, fulfilling the shared aspirations of their peoples.
The official urged Cambodia and Vietnam to work together in regional endeavors, and expressed his belief that as members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), they can play a vital role in strengthening the bloc's central role, ultimately benefiting both countries. Additionally, he advocated for further multilateral cooperation among Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos./.
