Cambodian court orders arrest of exile opposition leader

The Phnom Penh court on September 16 ordered the arrest of Sam Rainsy, exile leader of the dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Phnom Penh court onSeptember 16 ordered the arrest of Sam Rainsy, exile leader of the dissolvedopposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

Judge Koy Saop asked authorities to promptly seek, arrest andbring Rainsy to court for offending Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.

Spokesperson of the Cambodian Ministry of Justice KimSantepheap said if convicted, Rainsy could face a jail sentence of up to 10years.

During an interview granted to the Radio Free Asia (RFA) onSeptember 12, Rainsy said words that insulted the King.

At a press conference with the Lao Prime Minister in PhnomPenh on September 12, Cambodian PM Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Cambodia hasasked ASEAN member states to arrest and extradite Rainsy and his supporters ifthey enter their territories./.
