Hanoi (VNA) – Cambodian PrimeMinister Hun Sen inaugurated the country’s largest hydropower scheme LowerSesan II on December 17 in the northeastern province of Stung Treng.

The 780-million-USD project is a joint venturebetween Cambodia’s Royal Group (39 percent), the Chinese state-owned HydrolancangInternational Energy (51 percent), and Vietnam’s EVN International (10percent).

The Lower Sesan II dam is 56.5m in height, coveringa plot of 36,000ha, and has a total designed capacity of 400 megawatts.

The project was built under abuild-operate-transfer (BOT) contract that lasts for 45 years, of which fiveyears were earmarked for construction and 40 years for operation.

Cambodian Minister of Mining and Energy Suy Semsaid the dam is estimated to produce 1.9 billion kilowatt-hours per year.

Ownership will be handed over to the Cambodian Governmentafter 40 years of operation. –VNA
