Phnom Penh (VNA)♉ – Cambodia’s Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary, located in the heart of the Tonle Sap Lake, has been recognised as a Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar Site), the country’s Ministry of Environment said on December 2.
The 21,342-hectare sanctuary, the fourth Ramsar site in the country, is the South-East Asia's largest water bird colony.
Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary is the main habitat and breeding place of more than 50,000 birds, of whichh at least ten species are on the brink of extinction, including Spot-billed Pelicans, Greater Adjutants, storks, among others.
Cambodia is one of the 151 members to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
The other three Cambodia's Ramsar Sites are the mangrove forest in Koh Kong province and two along the Tonle Sap Lake.
Worldwide, there are 2,240 Ramsar Sites.-VNA
Located in Tam Nong district of the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, Tram Chim National Park boasts a rich biodiversity that turned it into the world’s 2000th Ramsar site in 2012.
