Cambodia frees leader of opposition party Kem Sokha
Leader of the dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha was released from Trapeng Phlong prison in the country’s Tbong Khmum province and returned to his home in Phnom Penh in early morning of September 10.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Leader of the dissolved opposition Cambodia NationalRescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha was released from Trapeng Phlong prison in thecountry’s Tbong Khmum province and returned to his home in Phnom Penh in earlymorning of September 10.
The release was madeunder an order of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court judge Ky Rithy, which wasissued on September 9.
Earlier on August30, the court still decided to prolong the detention of Kem Sokha for sixmonths to serve investigation and judging procedure.
After Prime MinisterHun Sen completed his new cabinet, he proposed the amnesty and release of anumber of opposition political activists.
Kem Sokha, 64, wasarrested on September 3, 2017, and detained from September 6 for the charge of“colluding with foreigners” under Article 443 of the country's Criminal Code.
On March 5, thePhnom Penh Court ordered additional six months of detention for Kem Sokha forinvestigation. He could face up to 30 years in prison if found guilty.
More than two monthsafter his arrest, the CNRP was dissolved by the Supreme Court and 118 seniorparty members banned from joining politics for five years.-VNA
