Cambodia cancels ban on party leaders from holding dual nationality

Phnom Penh (VNA)🧸 – President of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and Prime Minister Hun Sen on January 7 cancelled the plan to amend the country’s election code which would ban political party leaders from holding dual citizenships.
He revealed the decision during a commemoration of the 37th anniversary of Cambodia’s victory over the Khmer Rouge.
After due consideration, CPP key leaders wanted to see more participation in the political process; to facilitate this, the party was prompted to adhere to the original law of allowing all political party leaders to join the upcoming elections, though they hold one or even ten nationalities, Hun Sen said.
The PM added that the CPP welcomes all political parties to participate in the 2017 commune elections and the 2018 national election.
