Brunei plans to build a waste incineration plant that can process 800 to 1,000 tonnes of waste per day to generate electricity, according to Minister of Development Dato Haji Mohd Juanda.

Hanoi (VNA)꧋ – Brunei plans to build a wasteincineration plant that can process 800 to 1,000 tonnes of waste per day togenerate electricity, according to Minister of Development Dato Haji MohdJuanda.

Speaking at the 19th meeting of the Legislative Council on the ministry's annual budget on March 19, the minister said thatthe waste incineration plant will help achieve more resilient and efficient solidwaste management and much smaller area for landfills. He stressed problems such as odour and leachate thatare usually associated with landfills can be avoided. With the incorporation of the latest solid wastemanagement technologies, pollution problems such as gas emissions fromincinerators can be dealt with as best as possible. This approach also ensuresmore effective waste management for the next 20 years, he added.

Brunei's Sungai Paku Engineered Landfill site, whichcovers 104 hectares and receives 90% of the country's waste, is expectedto reach its capacity limit by 2030./.
