BRIC nations call for reform of global financial system

The leaders of Brazil , Russia , India and China (BRIC) concluded a summit in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia on April 15 with calls for urgent reforms to the global financial system, including the voting powers at the World Bank.

The day-long summit, the second of its kind after the first inRussia in June 2009, brought together Brazilian President Luiz InacioLula da Silva, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, India Prime MinisterManmohan Singh and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The leaders discussed a range of issues related to the world’seconomic situation, the Group of 20, the reform of global financialorganisations, climate change and dialogue and cooperation amongst BRICcountries. They also touched upon matters regarding Iran ’s nuclearprogramme.

As emerging economies, the BRIC countries account for over 40 percentof the world’s population and 16 percent of its gross domestic product.The nations have given global economic growth an added momentum./.
