Belgium leaders treasure ties with Vietnam

Brussels (VNA) – Belgian leaders told Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Huethat they attach importance to the relationship between the two countries aswell as Vietnam’s important position in the EU-ASEAN ties.

Deputy PM Hue had a working session with Belgian Deputy PM and Minister forEmployment, Economy and Consumer Affairs Kris Peeters, and met with SenatePresident Christine Defraigne, and Minister-President of Flanders GeertBourgeois on September 19 as part of his visit to the European nation. 

The two sides agreed to promptly roll out plans on trade, investment andculture promotion in each country to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomaticties between Vietnam and Belgium (1973-2018).

They also agreed to maintain high-level meetings and the exchange of all-leveldelegations, while continuing to closely coordinate and support each other atmultilateral forums.

They held that economy is the main pillar of the bilateral cooperation, andconsented to take more active measures to facilitate export and encourageBelgian businesses to invest in Vietnam in such areas as maritimetransportation, logistics, green technologies, agriculture, renewable energyand health care which are of their priorities and strengths.

Deputy PM Hue lauded relations between Vietnam and all-level authorities ofBelgian regions and localities, saying they have brought about pragmaticoutcomes in research, education-training, French language teaching, healthcare, technical support, environmental protection and cultural exchanges.

Deputy PM and Minister for Employment, Economy and Consumer Affairs KrisPeeters, and Senate President Christine Defraigne shared Deputy PM Hue’s viewsabout the importance of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement to promotingeconomic links between EU members, including Belgium, and Vietnam.

The two sides, therefore, agreed to tie up to accelerate the signing andratification of the deal.

Deputy PM Hue suggested the Flanders region expand its cooperation programmesin Vietnamese localities.

Minister-President Bourgeois said that Flanders enterprises always placeimportance to the Vietnamese market and will step up their trade and investmentactivities in the country, as well as other nations in ASEAN and Asia-Pacificthrough Vietnam.

The two sides will advance the relations, especially via scholarshipprogrammes, joint research studies between their universities and researchinstitutes, expand collaboration in the realms of Flanders’ strengths andVietnam’s interests like research in new materials, sustainable aquaculture, ITand medical products, and increase the operational efficiency of the FlandersInvestment and Trade (FIT) inVietnam.

Also on September19, Deputy PM Hue had a meeting with European Commissioner for MaritimeAffairs, Fisheries and Environment Karmenu Vella, during which he called on theEU to continue its support for Vietnam in building policies on water resourcesmanagement, environmental protection planning, forest administration, forestryproduct trading.

Vella promised that the EU will increase its support for Vietnam in maritimeenvironmental management and sustainable exploitation of maritime resources.

Regarding the illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, Deputy PM Hueaffirmed that Vietnam has implemented many inclusive solutions to tackle theissue.

They agreed to maintain dialogue channels to effectively handle the problem.

The EU pledged to assist Vietnam in joining relevantinternational conventions.

The same day, Deputy PM Hue left Brussels for Bratislava, beginning his workingvisit to Slovakia.-VNA
