Phnom Penh (VNA) - A court in Cambodia on June 22 sentenceda Belgian man to life in prison for attempting to smuggle 1kg of cocaine intoCambodia.
David Noel Catry, 34, was arrested on January 2018 at the Phnom PenhInternational Airport when a kilogram of cocaine was found in his suitcase.
According to Cambodian media, Catry confessed to the court that hehad been offered 30,000 USD by a Brazilian man to bring the drug from Brazil tothe Southeast Asian country.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court also fined him 20,000 USD.
Cambodia has no death sentence for drug traffickers. Under itslaw, anyone who traffics more than 80 grams of illicit drug will be facing lifeimprisonment.
Since Thailand has taken tough measures against drug smugglingactivities in the early 2000s, Cambodia has become a route used for traffickingdrug, especially methamphetamine and heroin.
The Cambodian Government has promoted the fight against traffickingin drug in recent years, with hundreds of cases were brought to light,including those related to Cambodian senior officials and foreigners.-VNA
