Bangkok orders closure of malls, markets to prevent COVID-19

Bangkok's Governor Asawin Kwanmuang on March 21 announced a 22-day closure of shopping malls, markets and beauty salons in the capital city of Thailand from March 22 to April 12 amid the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.

Bangkok (VNA) -Bangkok's Governor Asawin Kwanmuang on March 21 announced a 22-day closure ofshopping malls, markets and beauty salons in the capital city of Thailand fromMarch 22 to April 12 amid the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.

The governor said that food zoneand pharmacy in malls are excluded from the closure. Restaurants and foodcourts can only offer take-away with no diners allowed to be seated.

He called on people not tostockpile food and consumer products in panic as restaurants and zones sellingnecessary consumer goods are still open.

The Bangkok MetropolitanAdministration (BMA) requested people to stay at home to help reduce the spreadof COVID-19. Preventive measures include social distancing, working from home andseparation of work shifts.

The government ordered atemporary closure of entertainment venues in Bangkok Metropolitan recently.Affected venues include movie theaters, bars, traditional massage parlors,gyms, golf courses, boxing stadiums and cockfighting arenas. All schools areclosed.

Thailand reported 188 new coronavirusinfections on March 22, its largest daily increase, raising the total number to599 cases, Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a Public Health Ministry spokesman, told anews conference.

The majority of the newinfections are connected to a previous cluster of cases from a boxing stadium, hesaid, adding that one patient had recovered./.
