Bangkok airport infrastructure fails to meet traffic demand

Airport infrastructure in the capital city of Bangkok, Thailand has failed to expand fast enough to cope with increasing traffic demand, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Bangkok (VNA) – Airport infrastructure in the capital city of Bangkok,Thailand has failed to expand fast enough to cope with increasing trafficdemand, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Bangkok isamong eight cities outlined by the IATA for aviation infrastructure deficiency.

The city’stwo main airports, Suvarnabhumi and DonMueang, are facing serious congestion, the same problems confronted by citiesworldwide like Sydney (Australia), Manila (the Philippines), Jakarta(Indonesia), Mumbai (India), Mexico City (Mexico), New York (the US), and SaoPaulo (Brazil).

Statisticsby the Airports of Thailand showed that Suvarnabhumi Airport received a totalof 59.1 million passengers in the first nine months of 2017, a year-on-yearincrease of 6.5 percent, while its designed capacity is only 45 millionpassengers a year.

About 37.2million passengers were crammed into Don Mueang Airport in the reviewed period,up 7.2 percent year-on-year, also exceeding the capacity.

The IATAhas called on the government of Thailand to work with the industry to providesufficient infrastructure for the airports to ensure the economy benefits fromthe development of the global air transportation industry.-VNA
