ASEAN, Russia boost economic ties

Russia’s Deputy Minister of Economic Development Alexey Likhachev and ASEAN Deputy Secretary General Lim Hong Hin have discussed issues of their common concern, especially cooperation opportunities emerging from the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Connectivity programme.

At a recent reception for Likhachev, Lim, who is responsible for theAEC, briefed the Russian official and his delegation to Indonesia on thelatest developments in the establishment of the economic communityexpected to be completed by 2015 and the implementation of a master planon ASEAN Connectivity.

For his part, Likhachev affirmed thebloc’s central role and efforts in maintaining peace, security,stability and development in the region as well as the great potentialbetween the two sides in the fields of transport, energy, informationtechnology, tourism and the Public-Private Partnership investment fund.

He reiterated Russia’s commitments to continue workingclosely with ASEAN countries through its ongoing collaboration withrelevant ASEAN sectoral bodies and intensifying dialogues between thebusiness communities.

He also laid importance on stepping upthe implementation of the ASEAN-Russia Trade and Investment CooperationWork Programme, and stressed the significant role of the Russia-ASEANBusiness Council in facilitating collaboration between their businesscommunities to utilise trade and investment opportunities.-VNA
