APEC seeks sponsors’ technical support for corruption prevention

HCM City(VNA) – The APEC Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (ACTWG) held ameeting with sponsors on August 21 on the framework of the ongoing third SeniorOfficials’ Meeting (SOM 3) in Ho Chi Minh City.
The meeting aimed to explorethe need for technical support for the corruption prevention and control of APECmember economies.
Government DeputyChief Inspector Nguyen Van Thanh said that after countries completed theassessment of their implementation of UN anti-corruption conventions, they havefound a great need for technical assistance, which is one of the importantfactors to the realisation of the conventions.
Vietnam expects thatafter the meeting, international sponsors will continue providing technicalaids and consultations to APEC member economies in order to help them deal withexisting problems and challenges and meet sponsors’ requirements, he said.
According to Thanh,Vietnam demands technical support for the completion of institutions and policieson corruption prevention, the strengthening of anti-corruption agencies, and theraising of public awareness of corruption fight.
Vietnam hopes forinternational support in researching, surveying and gathering information forthe compilation of legal documents, he said, highlighting the need for exchangingspecialists and organisingseminars, training courses and consultations insideand outside the country.
Earlier on August18-20, the APEC Network on Anti-Corruption Authorities and Law EnforcementAgencies (ACT-NET) also held a workshop on the strengthening of cooperationamong law enforcement agencies in asset revoking and money launderingprevention as well as international cooperation in combating bribery and extraditionof criminals.-VNA
