Anti-plastic waste alliance to focus on Southeast Asia

The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) has said it will prioritise much of its 1 billion USD fund to curb plastic waste in Southeast Asia.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Alliance to End Plastic Waste(AEPW) has said it will prioritise much of its 1 billion USD fund to curbplastic waste in Southeast Asia.

The AEPW, headquartered in Singapore, consistsof 40 companies, including big ones like ExxonMobil, Chevron Phillips Chemical,Shell and Procter & Gamble. 

The alliance committed 1 billion USD to ananti-plastic waste fund when it was launched earlier this year. It pledged anotherhalf of the sum in the next five years.

The AEPW said the money will finance citypartnerships and infrastructure to support waste management in Southeast Asiancountries, which are among the world’s worst ocean polluters.

In June, the Association of Southeast AsianNations (ASEAN) acknowledged plastic waste as a major problem for the regionand adopted a joint declaration to combat marine debris.-VNA
