AMM-58: US Secretary of State calls meeting with Chinese counterpart ‘constructive’

There are "high odds" that a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could happen, though no specific date or time has been discussed, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Hanoi (VNA) ✤– US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on July 11 described his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-58) in Malaysia as “constructive”.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rubio said, “I think there’s some areas of potential cooperation. I thought it was very constructive, positive meeting”. He added there are "high odds" that a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could happen, though no specific date or time has been discussed.
This marks the first direct meeting between Rubio and Wang since President Trump returned to office in January 2025. It comes amid ongoing tensions between the two countries, particularly over tariffs.
At one point, the Trump administration imposed additional tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods, prompting China to retaliate with tariffs of up to 125% on US exports. However, on May 12, both sides agreed on a temporary reduction of 115% for a 90-day period as a foundation for further negotiations. Currently, the US levies a 30% tariff on Chinese goods, while China imposes a 10% rate on goods from the US./.
